How to judge what a domain is worth

Type a domain and see the traits that actually move its price, next to the real prices of comparable domains listed in the market right now. We give no estimated figure.

What this tool actually gives you

Five traits that can be measured and do move the price: the length of the name, the extension, the mix of letters and digits, hyphens, and a rough syllable count. After that it puts the prices of comparable listings from this same market beside them; comparable meaning the same extension and roughly the same length. Those prices are not made up, they come from real listings on this site.

The syllable count is worked out by counting vowel groups, and we say plainly that it is approximate. It is enough for comparing two domains with each other and it claims nothing more than that.

What it does not do

It does not check whether a domain is available, it does not pull whois, and it does not show the age or the history of a domain. If you want to know whether the name in your head is still free, this tool was not built for that and the domain registration page answers you on the spot.

Why you do not see an estimated figure

Because any number a formula produces for the value of a domain is made up. Two domains of the same length on the same extension can differ tenfold in price, because the meaning of the word, the demand in that particular trade, and whether anybody is looking for it at all fit into no formula. A site that hands you a figure with confidence is either using an average that has nothing to do with your name, or it wants something from you.

What actually helps is this: look at the traits, then put the prices of a few comparable domains that are listed right now beside them, and judge for yourself. One thing we have seen a lot in practice is that sellers weight the length of the name too heavily and the extension too lightly; a five letter name on ir usually sells more easily than the same name on an uncommon extension, even when the seller is certain their name is special.

A limit that matters right now

The market has only just opened and its listings are still few, so the comparables section comes back empty for a lot of domains, or shows only one or two. Comparing against two listings is not comparing. Until the count goes up, take the traits seriously and the numbers with caution. We are writing this because a tool that does not tell you it is empty walks you into a wrong conclusion.

Want to sell the domain you just checked? Posting a listing is free. To see what is listed right now, look at the domains section of the market. If you are still undecided about the extension, we have written about the difference between ir and com separately. Last checked: August 2026.

Five points for judging a domain's value

We set Hover's guidance on choosing a domain name and the pages of two domain marketplaces beside this tool.

1

Name length

Hover advises a name that is concise, easy to type and brand-aligned.

With us The length of the name is one of five traits the tool measures.

2

Extension

Hover says extensions are neutral in Google's eyes.

With us The extension moves price, not rank; the tool looks at price.

3

Letters, digits and hyphens

Hover wants a name that is easy to type.

With us The mix of letters, digits and hyphens is measured too.

4

Prices of comparables

Sedo holds over 19 million entries and Afternic distributes across registrars.

With us Prices of same-extension, similar-length listings from this market come beside the traits; they are real listings, not invented.

5

An honest number

Automated valuations in the market typically give one figure.

With us We give no estimated figure. The syllable count is approximate. It does not check availability, Whois or history.
