Claude runs a learning mode in its architecture that, per Anthropic own documentation, operates like a tutor: instead of a direct answer, it generates a question engineered to lead the user to the result. For writing and argumentation its throughput is high, but the pipeline that converts a source into a podcast, flashcards or a quiz is not implemented, and that gap is what holds its position down in the study ranking.

What learning mode does at the operational level
In its education documentation, Anthropic specifies that Claude learning mode operates like a tutor and generates questions engineered to let the user reach the answer independently. In practice: submit a problem and the system first queries the user approach; submit an argument and it asks what evidence supports it. For studying, that is precisely the mechanism that works, and precisely the one users typically find uncomfortable.
Why it holds third position in the study ranking
Because that table measures content-digestion formats and the volume of source material a system can process, not the quality of reasoning. Claude does not generate an audio overview, flashcards and quiz are absent from its output-format spec, and Anthropic publishes no numeric specification for project capacity. An empty cell in our table indicates a vendor published no figure, and that documentation gap accounts for part of the ranking distance.
Against that, for work whose final output is prose, its throughput exceeds both candidates ranked above it: drafting an essay, constructing an argument, processing a dense text and reproducing it in the user own words. If that is the operating scope, its position on that table is not operationally relevant.

A free tier exists. The Pro plan is priced at $20 a month on monthly billing, or the equivalent of $17 a month on annual billing ($200 up front). The Max plan starts at $100 a month. Unlimited project capacity, for maintaining an orderly record of chats and documents, is provisioned on the Pro plan, and the university deployment integrates with Canvas and Panopto.

Technical verdict
If the operating scope is writing and conceptual understanding, provision Claude and enable learning mode. If the operating scope is compressed review of a notes package before an exam, this tool is not engineered for that and Gemini Notebook is the better fit. Running both in parallel is also a reasonable configuration, and it is the one in active use here.
