The short answer
Your SEO competitor is not the company you compete with in the market. An SEO competitor is any domain that surfaces for the same keywords you are targeting, and that usually takes in marketplaces, news sites and blogs that do not sell your product at all.
That distinction is where the value of this tool sits. A team whose competitor list came out of a marketing meeting usually has three or four familiar names and builds content around them. The real list from the results page is almost always larger and holds names nobody expected, and it is those unexpected names that take the traffic.
Once the list is in hand, go to the domains near your own size, not the biggest name at the top. A competitor a little ahead of you has both a keyword list you can follow and a link profile you can reproduce. Measuring yourself against a market giant only proves they are bigger, which you already knew.
The logical next step after this tool is taking two or three domains from the list into the backlink gap. That moves you from knowing who your competitors are to knowing exactly where to get links, and the second one is what turns directly into work.
The output you receive
The exact meaning of each output column. Read this before your first run so you do not misread a value.
- Shared keywords
- The count of keywords that both your domain and that rival hold a Google rank for.
The data source and method
Runs DataForSEO Labs competitors_domain, limited to the US market and google.com because Labs still has no Iran coverage; for most Iranian domains the output is empty, and that is reported plainly.
The situations where it helps
To pin down who really competes with you in search, which is not always the same list as your business rivals, before you design a content or link-building plan.
Where it falls short
This tool runs on a database that only knows the US market and google.com, so for most Iranian domains it returns nothing and we show that plainly rather than fabricating a guessed list. If your domain is Iranian, the correct substitute is link competitors: its basis is referring-domain overlap rather than keywords, and for exactly that reason it is not tied to location and works for .ir. The second limit is conceptual: keyword overlap does not equal real competition. A general encyclopedia can share hundreds of keywords with you without ever taking a customer from you.
A lesson from working with it
An empty output for an Iranian domain means we have no data, not that there are no competitors. In practice the difference is large, because a team that reads an empty result as therefore we have no competitors makes exactly the mistake this tool was meant to prevent. That is why we show it empty rather than as zero, and point to the substitute tool right there.
What it costs
There is no monthly subscription. You raise the wallet balance, and the price of each run is written on the button before you press it; without a run there is no deduction.
Common questions about this tool
It is empty for my Iranian site, what should I do?
Use link competitors. That tool measures referring-domain overlap instead of keywords, and because that data is not tied to location it returns a real result for .ir domains too.
Why is a site that is not my competitor at all on the list?
Because the criterion is keyword overlap, not commercial rivalry. A news site or an encyclopedia can share many keywords with you. Put those rows aside and focus on domains that genuinely sell what you sell.
How many competitors should I take seriously?
Two or three. More than that does not become a plan in practice. Pick the ones near your own size and slightly ahead, because their to-do list is actually executable.
